Some people think that the Schengen area is the same as Europe. Although it partly coincides with the EU, it is not completely identical. ETIAS does not apply to the EU, but only to the Schengen area. Only in this area is it possible to travel without border control. There is also the term European Monetary Union.  The Schengen area is not congruent with the European Union (EU)

More and more tourists from other continents visit the Schengen area. Europe is especially popular with tourists from America and Asia. This shows the attractiveness of the Schengen area for tourists. This of course poses a threat to internal security. The more travelers enter the Schengen area, the greater the danger of terrorist attacks. America has been aware of this fact for a long time and with ESTA has created a good entry point. Without much effort, tourists provide important data and receive an entry permit. They do not need to visit a consulate for this.
