ETIAS - theory and practical implementation
English

1. what is ETIAS?

ETIAS is the acronym for European Information and Authorisation System. In 2016, the European Commission proposed to set up a control system to monitor travellers who enter the EU without a visa. This applies to citizens of more than 60 countries.

The Schengen visa and ETIAS
English

The ETIAS does not replace the Schengen visa, it complements it. Until now, people entering the Schengen area needed either a passport without a visa or a Schengen visa. All travellers who were previously able to enter the Schengen area without a visa will in future require an ETIAS entry permit. For travellers who have always needed a Schengen visa, nothing will change. They will still have to apply for their visa.

Similarities and differences between ETIAS and ESTA
English

The requirement for an ESTA application for travelers to the USA has been in place since the beginning of 2009, and the Schengen area will follow at the end of 2022. The participating states want to secure their borders with a similar system. Since the USA has gained more experience in this area, it goes without saying that ETIAS has taken over many of the features of ESTA. However, one cannot be sure that all features are the same, even if the similarities outweigh the differences.
