What impact does the Corona pandemic have on ETIAS?

Undefined

At the moment, the whole world and especially Europe is groaning under the Covid 19 pandemic. Many things that were considered safe until a few months ago have been put to the test by the pandemic. Many people are wondering if this might also apply to ETIAS. The planning has been going on for several years. The European entry permit is supposed to start at the end of 2022.

Planning for ETIAS has been going on for some time now

The planning for ETIAS goes back to 2016. At that time, the President of the European Commission was Jean-Claude Juncker. He was of the opinion that European states need to know which people are crossing their borders. Although there was a visa requirement for certain states, many people can only enter with an identity card.

In order to ensure security, it is necessary for travellers to disclose some data about themselves. It goes without saying that these are processed in accordance with the data protection guidelines. After the end of the validity period, they will be deleted. The central database will be the ETIAS Watchlist. This will be fed not only by data from ETIAS, but also from other sources, such as the Europol database.

In order for the databases and ETIAS to be able to perform their tasks, it is important that every traveller reliably discloses his or her data. It only takes a few minutes to fill in. The price for this is increased security in the Schengen area.

 Will ETIAS be postponed again?

The start of ETIAS has already been postponed once and many are now asking whether ETIAS will be postponed again. This question cannot be answered with certainty yet, as the Corona pandemic is still not under control. At the moment, Europe is in a third wave. Many countries are strengthening their lockdowns. It is still not known whether this will affect ETIAS. There is also no reliable information about this, because the leaders currently have the virus on their minds and not ETIAS.

The chances of a timely introduction are good, however, since it is to a large extent an online system. A lot of work can be done from home in the home office. Conferences can also be held online. However, the meetings are not quite as effective. How the renewed delay will affect the introduction of ETIAS remains to be seen. At the moment, nothing is known about a planned postponement.
