In recent years, there have been repeated and devastating terrorist attacks. The assassins did not always come from countries for which a visa is required for entry. Sometimes they also entered the Schengen area legally with a passport or identity card over the external borders. The USA reacted to this threat several years ago and introduced the ESTA system. Now Europe is following suit and, from the end of 2022, will require an ETIAS application for all travellers who can currently enter the Schengen area without a visa.
Travellers will be checked before crossing the border
In addition to the ETIAS system, the European Parliament and the European Council have also agreed on an entry/exit system, which will also be established in the near future.
Through the ETIAS system, each traveller is checked through several databases when filling in the application. Without the user being aware of it, the Schengen Information System, the Visa Information System, the Eurodoc database and Europol data are searched for the traveller. If the transfer is attempted with a stolen passport, this is also detected. This is done by checking the database for stolen and lost travel items.
Other databases are also being established. This ensures not only security, but also data protection, which is always in accordance with the currently valid laws.
The check is not only intended to exclude security risks, but also to prevent illegal immigration. At the same time, travellers who pose a health risk will be denied the right to cross the border.
The cooperation of the traveller is important
For ETIAS to be a success, the involvement of the tourist or business traveller is important. He or she must answer all questions truthfully and in detail. As far as personal data are concerned, he will use his passport as a guide. Here he has to transfer the data exactly. Especially the number of the passport is important. If it is incorrect, he will be rejected at the border.
In addition, he has to answer some health and safety questions. It is not yet known exactly what these look like. It can be assumed that ETIAS will follow the guidelines from the USA. It is possible that some questions will be dropped and others added. It is about security in the Schengen area. The questions will be adapted to the specific circumstances.
The permit does not guarantee entry
Some travellers have had to find out painfully that the ESTA application by no means guarantees entry to the USA. This will probably be the case with ETIAS.
Before the traveller can start his holiday in the Schengen area, he is subjected to extensive checks. If a database reports a hit, the traveller is examined more closely. There is no blanket rejection, as with ESTA. However, this can delay approval by a few days.
At the border he hands over his passport to the border official. If the passport officer notices something unpleasant about the behaviour of the traveller, he can still prohibit the border crossing. In practice, this may happen rarely, but it is not impossible.
