What travelers will have to consider when crossing borders in the future

English

Until now, the borders of the Schengen area have been open to some travelers. They only needed a passport and could cross the border. However, this contradicts the need for security. If it is possible to cross the border without problems, this also applies to criminals and terrorists. ETIAS should now provide greater security at a lower cost. For travelers it is a small effort. Not only does it change a lot in terms of travel preparations, but also when crossing the border or checking in for a flight, ship, bus or train.

 Carriers check travellers

This is nothing new, because even now, travelers to the Schengen area must show their passports. The traveler has to show his passport. It is expected that the data will be stored in the system, so it will not be necessary to carry a confirmation with you. Nevertheless, it may be useful to print out a copy of the authorization. It can always happen that the system crashes. So the tourist has a document in his hand and can still travel.

There is a transitional arrangement for buses. These do not yet check the travel permits of their passengers. It will take some time for them to get used to their new task.

If the border official enters the data into the system, it is passed on to various databases. If no travel authorization is stored in the system, the tourist will not be able to cross the border. If all conditions for crossing the border are met, nothing more stands in the way of crossing the border.

ETIAS does not automatically authorize entry

Many travelers believe that ETIAS is equivalent to an entry permit. But this is not so. In most cases there are no problems when crossing the border. However, if the border official gets the impression that the traveler poses a threat to the internal security of the Schengen area, he will prevent entry. Therefore, the tourist should refrain from making any joking remarks that could cause the border official to refuse entry. This will be noted in the documents and may have a negative effect on further entry.
