ETIAS closes important information gaps

English

When a traveler crosses the border with a visa, he or she reveals a lot of personal information. The authorities can then assess very well whether this traveler poses a risk. This is not the case for travelers without a visa. It is only known that the tourist or business traveler comes from a country from which few criminals and terrorists have entered the Schengen area. So the principle of hope prevails. ETIAS provides a remedy here. Although the data are probably not quite as extensive as for a visa application, they are sufficient to significantly increase security in the Schengen area.

The prerequisite is exact data entry

A lot of data is asked for during the application process. The traveler can take some of them directly from the passport. Here he must be particularly careful. According to experience with the US ESTA system, entry will be denied if the information in the ETIAS application is incorrect. This will probably also be the case with ETIAS. Please take over the name and especially the passport number exactly.

For other questions there is no direct control. Health questions or questions about personal settings should also be answered truthfully. If it turns out afterwards that some information was wrong, this can lead to problems in a later application.

Of course, all data will only be used for the purpose of entry and will only be stored until the end of the validity of the application.

The data will be compared with various databases

The following process will only take a short time if there is no hit. The ETIAS system is connected to several databases. Within seconds the system compares the applicant's data with the Schengen Information System, the Visa Information System, Europol data and the Eurodoc database. In addition, other databases are to be created by the time ETIAS is launched. The system even accesses already existing Interpol databases.

If there is a hit, the data is checked manually. So there is no general rejection. In this case, the approval may be delayed for a few days. Travelers should therefore not wait until the last moment to submit an application.

If the ETIAS application is still rejected, the traveler can appeal against it. If the application is rejected, the only remaining option is to apply for a visa.

It is important to close the information gap, because this will make the borders of the Schengen area more secure. For the tourist or business traveler, the effort is comparatively low. However, the gain in security is very high.
