What is known about ETIAS so far

English

ETIAS is the European Travel Information and Authorisation System, which will make travelling in the Schengen area safer from 2023. Some facts are considered to be very certain, for others travellers can only guess what will be in store for them.

What exactly is ETIAS

ETIAS stands for European Travel Information and Authorisation System. It is designed to make it easier for travellers from certain countries to enter the Schengen area. These are tourists and business travellers who were previously able to enter the Schengen area without a visa. Through the system, a precise check of the tourist is carried out by several databases. If the query yields a hit, the application is checked again by hand. -If a traveller poses a potential threat, he or she will be refused entry.

Who will need ETIAS in the future

Around 30 million people will enter the Schengen area from the end of 2022. As mentioned, these are countries that were previously able to enter the Schengen area without a visa. The exact list comprises about 60 countries. The stay is limited to 90 days within a period of 180 days. This restriction also applies with ETIAS. However, in the past there have been increasing problems with entry controls. Many tourists or business travellers have stayed much longer.

Entry is only necessary for certain purposes. Permitted are tourist trips, visits of relatives, trips for the treatment of diseases. If you are not sure whether your stay is covered by ETIAS, it is better to enquire beforehand. Business trips are also possible. The traveller can attend congresses and trade fairs, explore business opportunities and similar activities. A study or work stay is not possible.

What are the advantages of ETIAS?

ETIAS makes travelling and staying in the Schengen area safer. If travellers who pose a security risk want to enter the Schengen area, they will be refused entry.

ETIAS prevents illegal entry into the Schengen area. It also serves as a health check. Since travellers have to answer questions about their health, travellers with infectious diseases are refused entry.

ETIAS is positive for the member countries and for the travellers.

Of course, there are those who see only the negative side of ETIAS. After all, it is a hassle to fill out an ETIAS first. However, the time required is very short and the application is valid for three years. ETIAS makes travelling in the Schengen area safer, which is a benefit for all travellers staying in the participating countries.
