The UK voted to leave the EU by a narrow majority on 23 June 2016. The country finally left the EU on 31 January 2020. There was a transition period until the end of the year. Since 1 January 2021, the UK no longer belongs to the EU and will now be treated like any other member state. Of course, for the time being, the citizens of the island can enter the Schengen area without a visa. Only with the introduction of ETIAS will they have to change.

ETIAS increases the importance of FRONTEX

Many people are not familiar with the name FRONTEX. This institution has the task of guarding the external borders of the Schengen area. They check passports and turn back travellers. They will continue to do this after the introduction of ETIAS, but there will be some changes. Whereas now they only wave most travellers through, in future they will have to check every traveller.
