The Bahamas are located in the Atlantic Ocean and are part of the West Indies. There are around 700 islands in total, but only 30 of them are inhabited. The Bahamas have an area of almost 14,000 square kilometres, on which almost 400,000 people live. The name is derived from the Spanish Baja Mar, which means "shallow sea". This name comes from the Spanish conquistadors.
