Frontex is hardly known to the average traveller. When he leaves the external borders of the Schengen area, he may well encounter an official checking passports, but he is only marginally interested in which authority they come from. The introduction of ETIAS will not change this situation. Nevertheless, the new system has a great influence on FRONTEX.
The number of employees is to increase significantly
FRONTEX currently has 1200 employees. This sounds like a lot at first glance, but it is not enough for effective control of the external borders. ETIAS is intended to make the borders more secure, but the new system can only achieve this if sufficient controls are in place. Until now, many travelers have been able to simply cross the border. They only need a passport. There are no more precise controls. With the introduction of ETIAS, this will change completely. Every traveler is checked at the border. However, as travellers should not wait any longer, FRONTEX needs more staff. The organization should get that too. A total of 10,000 employees are planned by 2027.
What is FRONTEX's task?
FRONTEX is called frontières extéruers and is responsible for guarding the European external borders and the coast. It has the same resources as ETIAS when it comes to checking travellers. In case of current threats, the system can immediately access and react accordingly. FRONTEX intervenes immediately in case of problems. This of course means that it must have sufficient personnel. This is already not always the case. If there is an increased crowd at the external borders, FRONTEX quickly reaches its capacity limits.
The Schengen area does not want to seal itself off from the rest of the world through ETIAS. Europe is a strong economic power and attracts many people with unfair or even terrorist intentions. Their border crossing must be prevented. ETIAS contributes to this and FRONTEX will also play an important role in the future.
Last but not least, it is the travelers who guarantee security. They have to sacrifice a few minutes of their time as a small contribution. In most cases, they have their authorization in their hands after only a few minutes. After that they can enter for three years 90 days within a 180-day period.
