Tourists who visit the USA frequently are used to filling out a form. For this group, there is hardly any need to change. All they have to remember is that they now have to fill out another form when they start their trip. Overall, the differences between ETIAS and ESTA are not very big.
Both applications must be filled out online
ESTA and ETIAS are systems that require an Internet connection and an appropriate terminal device. Since not all travelers have the technical capabilities, they can have the application filled out by a friend, acquaintance or travel agency.
Both applications are subject to a fee. However, the ETIAS fee will differ from ESTA. An important difference is the fee for children and young people under 18 years of age. When applying for ESTA, everyone has to pay the fee, whether they are 80 years old or an infant. For the ETIAS application, only adults over 18 years old pay the fee.
ETIAS is valid longer than ESTA
The validity of ESTA is two years. ETIAS is expected to be valid for three years. In both cases the validity depends on the travel document. The full three years can only be used by those who have a valid passport that is valid for at least that long. Should this passport become invalid for any reason, the ETIAS entry permit is no longer valid.
Entry is possible for a total of 90 days within a 180-day period. This is better regulated than with ESTA. There are no clear statements how long the traveler may enter the USA. Therefore it happens again and again that tourists want to use ESTA as a permanent residence permit. In most cases, the border official puts a stop to this by refusing entry.
The one of first entry is important that the traveler first enters the state that he has indicated on the ETIAS application. With ESTA this is irrelevant. After the first entry, the tourist can move freely within the Schengen area. At a later entry he can enter the country of his choice.
Just like ESTA, the ETIAS permit does not guarantee entry. The border guard always has the last word. He can refuse entry without a reason if he believes that the traveller poses a threat to security in the Schengen area.
