Within Europe there are different borders

English

Some people think that the Schengen area is the same as Europe. Although it partly coincides with the EU, it is not completely identical. ETIAS does not apply to the EU, but only to the Schengen area. Only in this area is it possible to travel without border control. There is also the term European Monetary Union. This article explains what it has to do with these terms on sihc and what this has to do with ETIAS.

The Schengen area is not congruent with the European Union (EU)

Whoever says that Austria belongs to the EU and the Schengen area is right. So with ETIAS entry is possible. The situation is different with Croatia, for example. This country belongs to the EU, but not to the Schengen area. Except the mentioned Croatia Bulgaria, Romania and Cyprus do not belong to the Schengen area, but to the EU. Outside the Schengen area are Ireland and Great Britain.

There are also other smaller countries that are not part of the Schengen area. Whoever travels to Andorra, Monaco, San Marino or visits the Vatican, is strictly speaking no longer in the Schengen area. However, these small states do not have their own international airport. So if you travel to Monaco, you issue an ETIAS for France and then visit Monaco.

By the way, there are some overseas territories of France, the Netherlands and Spain, which belong to the EU, but not to the Schengen area.

Also the monetary union does not coincide with the Schengen area

Another "area" within Europe is the monetary union. This comprises all states that use the euro as their currency. Although all states of the EU belong to the monetary union, it is not possible to pay with Euro in all states. One example is the Czech Republic. There you pay with crowns. The states that have not yet introduced the Euro do not fulfill most of the criteria.

What do travellers have to pay attention to when using ETIAS?

ETIAS is only valid for the Schengen area. If the country belongs to the EU but not to the Schengen area, the traveler cannot simply trust that he can enter the country. In this case, he must inquire whether his passport is sufficient or whether a visa is required.
