When do I need ETIAS, when do I need a Schengen visa?

English

In the Schengen area the confusion caused by different visas was not exactly minor even before the introduction of ETIAs. Now ETIAS adds another variant. Some fear that the chaos regarding the different visas in the Schengen area could increase. But that is not to be feared. Anyone who wants to take a vacation in the Schengen area or is planning a business trip needs either a Schengen visa or an ETIAS. Those who have needed a visa for such trips so far will continue to need one. Travelers who have so far crossed the border with their passports will need an ETIAS in the future. This is a matter of a few minutes, but serves the security of all travelers. Students, for example, will need a national visa.

Tourists and business travelers will apply for an ETIAS

On the ETIAS information page the reader will find a list of countries that do not require a Schengen visa. Until ETIAS is established at the end of 2022, these tourists and business travelers can cross the border without any problems.

After ETIAS is established in the Schengen area, travelers will have to change. If you are planning a recreational vacation, want to visit cities in the Schengen area or explore business opportunities, you will need an ETIAS.

The exhibition only takes a few minutes. However, travelers should allow enough time. A mistake is not always immediately noticed and can invalidate ETIAS. The information on the passport and on the ETIAS form must match exactly. A discrepancy will lead to entry problems at the border.

The other Schengen visas remain valid

Anyone not entering the Schengen area as a tourist or business traveler requires a visa. Anyone who is not a citizen of one of the countries classified as safe also requires a visa.

The number of different visas may be confusing at first glance, dohc is precisely regulated when which visa is required.

The Schengen visa of category A is intended for airport transfers. An entry into the Schengen area is not possible.

The category C visa is intended for shorter trips into the Schengen area. Here travelers can choose whether they want to enter once, twice or several times. Those who visit the Schengen area more frequently can choose between several validity periods: one year, three years or five years. Although there is no limit on the length of stay, the rule is still that the stay may not exceed 90 days within a six-month period. A longer stay is not possible.

Working and studying is not possible with the Schengen visa. Whoever plans to do so needs a national visa of category "D".
