What is possible with ETIAS?

English

If ETIAS is implemented as planned, it will not only make travelling in the Schengen area safer, but it will also be easy to complete and very convenient to use. The following article deals with how long ETIAS is valid and how long you are allowed to stay in the Schengen area with it. Finally, there is the question of which journeys can be undertaken with ETIAS.

ETIAS is valid for three years - normally

The validity of ETIAS is three years. By comparison, the US ESTA is only valid for two years. For both entry permits, the period of validity is related to the passport.

A passport number must be provided with the application. It goes without saying that only this document can be used for entry. If the passport is about to expire, ETIAS will also have a shorter period of validity. This will then be exactly as long as the passport. If you are not planning to travel immediately and your passport is about to expire, it is worth ordering a new one.

Entering the Schengen area with ETIAS

Tourists and business travellers can travel with ETIAS. Hospitalisation and cures are also possible. Studies are not permitted with ETIAS. National student visas are available for this purpose. Business travel does not include taking up employment. Rather, it refers to congresses, conferences and exploring business opportunities. If you are not sure whether your activity complies with ETIAS, it is better to ask before you are turned back at the border.

The first entry must be into the country indicated; the country no longer matters for the next entry. The traveller can therefore travel to the Schengen country of his choice.

Incidentally, the border official can refuse entry despite a valid ETIAS. He will do so if he believes that the traveller could pose a danger. It is therefore better for the tourist or business traveller to refrain from making any - even joking - statements.

The length of stay in the Schengen area

There are always problems with this point in the US ESTA system. The length of stay is not precisely regulated, and so it happens time and again that travellers misuse ESTA for a permanent stay in the USA.

With ESTA, this is precisely regulated. The tourist or business traveller may stay in the Schengen area for exactly 90 days within a 180-day period.
