What travellers can expect from the end of 2022 when entering the Schengen area

English

As things stand, ETIAS will be introduced at the end of 2022. The Corona pandemic has hardly changed the plans. Many travellers fear an unreasonable effort. English media even speak of an "entry fee" to Europe. But ETIAS has nothing to do with Brexit. Rather, it is a reaction to the security situation in Europe. In recent years, there have been repeated attacks. Some of these could have been prevented if there had been stricter controls at the borders. In order to keep the effort low, European governments have decided to introduce a uniform entry system, ETIAS. The administrative effort is associated with small costs, but these are hardly worth mentioning.

The application is quickly filled out via the internet

Filling out the application takes only a few minutes. The tourist or business traveller should have his passport ready. This must be valid. Now she or he fills out the application carefully. He or she does not have to submit a passport. This speeds up the procedure, but also carries the risk that incorrect entries will only be recognised at the airport. Therefore, the traveller should be concentrated when filling out the form. Especially the passport number is often entered incorrectly. This makes ETIAS invalid and it has to be applied for again at the airport. However, the plane does not wait until the application has been approved.

Once the application is submitted, it is usually approved within a few hours. Nevertheless, it can sometimes take a few days. It is better not to submit the application shortly before entering the country.

In addition to questions about one's personality, the questions about personal attitude and the health questions are also important. The applicant must also state the first country of entry. This is binding for the first journey. Later, the traveller can move freely within the Schengen area.

 Validity and entry with ETIAS

ETIAS is valid for three years after it has been issued. Since the entry permit is always linked to the passport, ETIAS loses its validity if the passport is also no longer valid. ETIAS allows entry for 90 days within a 180-day period.

What many people do not know: The border official has the last word on entry. HE will take a close look at the traveller, even if he can show a valid ETIAS document. If he suspects that the traveller could pose a danger, he will refuse to allow him to cross the border. It is therefore advisable to refrain from making any Euro-critical statements upon entry.
