Croatia is a country of longing for many series fans, as it is home to several locations of the legendary TV series Game-of-Thrones. People within the EU only need an identity card or passport. But what about people in other countries who would also like to visit the locations? Although Croatia is part of the EU, it is not yet part of the Schengen area. A Schengen visa is therefore not yet valid in the country.
Croatia is a candidate for accession to the Schengen area
Croatia already fulfils all the technical requirements to join the Schengen area. Now the European Council has to agree. This could be the case in the first half of this year. This means that Croatia could join the Schengen area this summer. However, this does not automatically mean that all border controls will be lifted immediately. First, the national parliament has to pass the corresponding laws, which could take several months.
A trip to the locations of Game of Thrones with a Schengen visa this summer is therefore unlikely. It will probably take until the end of the year before the borders finally fall.
The best destinations for Game of Thrones fans
Warning: The following text contains spoilers about Game of Thrones.
Several travel destinations are suitable for fans of the famous TV series. Here are a few of the most important:
Dubrovnik: Dubrovnik is now known to some fans only as "King's Landing" or "King's Mouth" (the English name). In the series and the novels, this is the capital of the Seven Kingdoms. It is where Cersei Lannister spins her intrigues, where her brother Tyrion kills his father and where Neddard Stark is beheaded in the first season.
The Red Keep is also located in Kings Landing. This is in the fortress of Lovrijenac, outside Dubrovnik on a rock.
The House of the Immortals is in the world of Game of Thrones in the city of Qarth, in the real world it is a part of Dubrovnik, namely the Minčeta Tower, an important defensive tower in the Old Town.
The Palace Gardens of King's Landing are in Trsteno in the arboretum there. This small village is also well suited for a shorter or longer day trip, as it lies directly by the sea. There the plotters of King's Landing, Cersei, Tyrion, Varys, Littlefinger, planned many new intrigues.
In the town of Bravos lies the House of Black and White and the Temple of the Many-Faced God. Tourists can find this in Šibenik, north of Split.
Near Šibenik is the Krka National Park. Many landscape photographs of Westeros were taken here. The seven waterfalls are remarkable.
Split also served as a filming location. Many scenes set in Meereen were shot in Diocletian's Palace and in the Klis Fortress.
