Is ETIAS postponed because of Corona?

English

The current Covid 19 pandemic is disrupting the lives of many people. Things that were taken for granted are no longer possible or only possible with restrictions. The summer holidays will take place, but in a different way than usual. Travel to most European countries should be possible. Things are not looking so good with the other countries. The Foreign Office has extended the travel warnings until 31 August. In most states the season is already over by then. Quite a few travellers wonder what the ETIAS permit will look like. Will it start as planned by the end of 2022?

The development of ETIAS is a longer process

The history of the ETIAS approval begins in 2016, when Jean-Claude Juncker, then President of the European Commission, gave a highly regarded speech. In it he said that the member states of the Schengen area need to know who crosses their borders. ETIAS will make travelling within the Schengen area safer. At the same time, however, the convenience of travellers should not change.

To guarantee the security of travellers, ETIAS accesses the various databases. Some systems have yet to be created as part of the development process. The result will be an ETIAS information system, ETIAS central units and national ETIAS units. All data will be collected on an ETIAS Watchlist. The ETIAS Watchlist will not only include data from the questionnaires, but also from Europol.

 Is ETIAS 2022 coming?

After the start of ETIAS has already been postponed once, there is of course a possibility that there will be another postponement. Nothing is known about this at the moment. Nor is the influence of the coronavirus ruled out. Although infection rates in Europe are declining, a second wave may occur. This could be accompanied by another lockdown. Many people will have to work from home or will not be able to pursue their current occupation at all. As much of the work on the ETIAS system is done online, these activities have little impact on the timetable. However, not all work can be done with the same efficiency in the home office. Necessary conferences are possible, but they are often not comparable to a traditional real meeting.

Since the time until the final implementation of ETIAS is very long, a few weeks or months of lockdown will probably have little effect on the timing. There is currently no communication on this either. If the crisis drags on for a longer period of time and there are repeated work restrictions, this could possibly change the timetable. But that is not the case at the moment.

 Conclusion

ETIAS is eagerly awaited by many people. After all, the Schengen area will then have a system comparable to that of the USA. The cost is small compared with the benefits. Many travellers are now wondering whether this can be achieved by the introduction date of the system at the end of 2022. After all, Covid-19 has made many dates impossible for the time being. Since research on a vaccine is being conducted at full speed all over the world - about 20 active substances are already in clinical trials - it is to be expected that the virus will be defeated sooner or later. At present, nothing is known about a postponement of the date. The coronavirus is also unlikely to have a major influence on the timing. Of course, there may be other problems that make a postponement necessary. However, as things stand at present, this is not to be expected.
