Covid-19 and ETIAS

English

Until ETIAS is established in the Schengen area and the first travelers with the permit can cross the borders, some preparations are necessary. Especially the development of the necessary infrastructure and databases may still take some time. Now, of course, the question arises whether the Covid-19 pandemic will cause a shift in the schedule. Forecasts for the future are difficult and nobody can predict how the pandemic will develop.

Many processes can be developed contactless at ETIAS

Since the beginning of the Corona pandemic, more and more work processes have been moved to the home office. The Internet and modern IT technologies make this possible. This is also possible up to a certain point with the establishment of ETIAs. Of course, meetings are always necessary, which are of course carried out with the necessary hygiene regulations.

ETIAS is a process that was already initiated in 2016. A lot of work has already been done, some is still to be done. Coordinated action is necessary to avoid delays. As long as the virus keeps the world on tenterhooks, work that can easily be done in the home office should be done first and foremost. Most scientists expect a vaccine in the middle of next year at the latest. After that, conferences should again be possible without restrictions.

Can the timetable be kept to

For a complex project like ETIAS, a postponement is always possible. Initially, the start date was planned for early 2021. According to more recent data, this date cannot be kept. Now we are talking about the end of 2022. Whether this date can be kept, nobody knows at the moment. A further postponement does not necessarily have to have anything to do with the Corona pandemic. Countless agreements have to be made and unforeseen difficulties arise. These cannot be avoided in advance. No one would have thought two or three years ago that a pandemic would slow down not only Europe but the whole world. All that remains for the traveller to do is to observe the development and react to it if necessary.

ETIAs - small form with a big impact

Some travelers may be happy about a postponement of ETIAS. After all, the form means additional work for an already stressful travel preparation. However, on closer inspection, it turns out that the effort is very small compared to the benefit. It takes only a few minutes to fill in the form and the tourist usually receives his travel authorization immediately. On the other hand, travel within the Schengen area is safe for everyone involved.

The processing of the data is of course carried out according to the strict guidelines of data protection. Every traveler is checked thoroughly within a few seconds. In most cases, the queries do not yield any hits. If this is the case, the information is checked manually. This is to prevent criminals or even terrorists from entering the Schengen area. In many areas ETIAS is similar to the U.S. ESTA. However, with the ETIAS system, the traveler can object to a refusal, which is not possible with ESTA.
