FRONTEX plays an important role in European security

English

In the past posts, there has been repeated talk of FRONTEX. Although this term also appears again and again in the daily media, many people have little idea about it.

 What is FRONTEX?

FRONTEX is the abbreviation for frontières extéruers. It was established in 2004 to secure Europe's external borders. At the moment FRONTEX employs 1200 people. Through ETIAS, the need for personnel will increase decisively. The number of necessary controls will increase and FRONTEX will also play a role in the application procedure itself. For this reason the number of employees will increase to about 10 000 in the next years.

Already in the past there have been situations where FRONTEX reached its capacity limits. One example is the refugee crisis in 2015.

FRONTEX staff can be requested by all member states. No advance notice is necessary. This "rapid deployment" is an important characteristic of FRONTEX. To be able to work effectively, an extension of rights is necessary.

This was done in a first step already in 2011. Since then it is possible for the staff to request additional staff and to order equipment independently. This is not enough, so there will be an extension of rights.

 FRONTEX is essential for ETIAS

ETIAS will bring FRONTEX further into focus.

When a participant fills out the form, the information is first checked by several databases. In most cases there are no problems. Sometimes there is a hit. In this the traveler is checked by the national staff of FRONTEX. This is done by hand. This is an advantage over the similar ESTA system of the USA. There, the traveler is simply rejected and either has to make a new application after a certain time.

When crossing the border, the officials check the passport of the traveler. The data must exactly match the information on the ETIAS application. This is a critical moment, because it happens again and again that the data do not match. For this reason, it is very important to be focused when filling out the application. A mistake cannot be corrected in every case. The traveler can try to make a new application at the airport, but there is no guarantee that the plane will be reached in time.
