The ETIAS application is quickly filled out

English

Many people are unsettled by new developments. Those who have so far only been able to enter the Schengen area with a passport may already have heard that a fundamental change is in the offing here from the end of 2022. Similar to travelling to the USA, from this time on travellers will have to submit an application with their personal data. This will be checked, after which authorisation for travel to the Schengen area will be granted.

ETIAS can only be filled out via the internet

The ETIAS application can only be filled out via the internet. A computer as a terminal is not absolutely necessary, a tablet or a mobile phone is also sufficient. The page can be accessed easily via these devices. It adapts to the respective end device so that the page is always easy to read.

Of course, not everyone has an internet connection yet, but that is no problem. The application can also be filled out by friends or acquaintances. Many travel agencies offer this as a service.

Concentrate when filling out the application

t is known from the similar ESTA system in the USA that there are always problems when entering the country. This happens when the data in the application does not match the passport documents. Unlike with a visa, the traveller does not have to hand over his or her passport. Therefore, there is no check in advance whether the data on both documents match. Therefore, it is important to be particularly concentrated here.

A frequent source of error is the passport number. Depending on the country, this consists of a long series of numbers and letters. Only a small mistake will make the ETIAS application invalid. Here, the traveller should better check the data twice.

The name is sometimes also a problem. Only the name noted in the passport is valid. Short or cose forms are often not accepted.

It is not yet known exactly what the security questions will look like. It is very likely that there will be health questions again. Not all diseases have to be listed. Only if the illness poses a safety risk for the traveller and the other passengers, the illness must be declared.

FRONTEX staff can turn the traveller back at the border

One point that is often overlooked is border control. If the application has been approved, this does not mean that the border crossing will also be approved. The border official always has the final say. If he rejects the traveller, it is not possible to enter the Schengen area even with ETIAS. Although FRONTEX officials rarely do this, they know from experience with ESTA that it can happen.
