ETIAS is on the home straight

English

The European Travel Information and Authorisation System, ETIAS for short, is to be introduced from the end of 2022. Travellers from certain countries outside the European Community will then need an ETIAS in addition to their identity card. Anyone who has ever been to the USA knows the procedure. Shortly before entering the country, the traveller must fill out a form with personal information and security questions. The European Commission has now announced an important milestone on the way to ETIAS on 3 August 2021: The rules on how ETIAS interacts with other information systems.

ETIAS draws its information from various databases

After the introduction of ETIAS, travellers outside the Schengen area will be checked before entering the country. It goes without saying that the collection and storage of data is done in accordance with the legal requirements. For this purpose, ETIAS makes use of various databases, some of which already exist or will only be created with the establishment of ETIAS, such as the Entry/Exit System (EES). Existing databases are the Schengen Information System (SIS) and the Visa Information System (VIS). In addition, there are Interpol databases on stolen documents. In addition, with the introduction of ETIAS, there will be an ETIAS Watchlist. This lists persons who have either already committed a criminal offence or whom the authorities reasonably suspect could carry out terrorist attacks. Since 3 August, there are now precise rules on how the individual systems can work together effectively. The aim is to increase security in the Schengen area.

ETIAS is easy to fill out

Since an ETIAS form does not yet exist, we can only speculate about its content. It is helpful to take a look at the related ESTA in the USA. Here, the applicant must first provide personal information, enter his or her passport number and answer a few security questions. The first country of entry must be specified. The holidaymaker must enter this country first. For further border crossings, the country of entry is no longer relevant. Due to developments this year and last year, it can be assumed that questions about vaccination status or a corona disease will also be included. The form can only be filled out online. A computer is not absolutely necessary for this; the form can also be filled out on a tablet or mobile phone. Those who do not have a good internet connection or a stable terminal can also have the form filled out by an acquaintance, relative or an agency.

The applicant must be careful when filling in the data. Incorrect information will invalidate ETIAS and prevent the tourist from entering the Schengen area.

After submission, the application is checked electronically. If the databases do not produce any hits, the permit will soon be issued. If there are discrepancies in the query, it can take up to a few days. In this case, the application is checked manually. In the rare case of a refusal, the traveller can appeal.

 Safer travel with ETIAS

At the end of 2022, the Schengen states will draw level with the USA: with ETIAS, they will establish an entry system that grants travellers access to the Schengen area for three years. The price is very low. A few minutes to answer the questions. The gain is a great deal of security.
