On 23 June 2016, almost 52 percent of British citizens voted to leave the EU. This means that it is not possible to enter the Schengen area with an identity card or passport only. Brief history of the United Kingdom
In the 19th century, the United Kingdom was the dominant economic and maritime power. This was triggered by Napoleon's Continental Blockade between 1806 and 1814, which was intended to ruin the UK economically. Afterwards, the UK looked for new sales markets, especially in the overseas territories.
After the First World War, which was victorious for the UK, 26 Irish counties founded the Republic of Ireland, 6 counties remained with the United Kingdom and today form Northern Ireland. Since 1927, the current state name "United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland" has been used.
In 1940, the United Kingdom declared war on Germany and managed to prevent a German invasion. However, the air war destroyed the cities of Coventry, parts of London and some other cities. Finally, in 1945, Germany capitulated to the Allies, which included the United Kingdom.
After the two world wars, most of the British colonies dissolved.
The British economy recovered as strongly as the German economy after the Second World War, but there was still a labour shortage, which was mainly filled by workers from the states of the former empire.
From 1969 onwards, there were increasing problems in Northern Ireland. Until 1998, conditions there were like those of a civil war. It was primarily a religious war between Protestants and Catholics.
In 1973, the UK (together with Ireland and Denmark) became a member of the European Community.
The Conservative Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher (1979 - 1990) wanted to fight inflation and carried out numerous reforms, abolished subsidies and privatised state-owned enterprises. As a result, unemployment rose, but the policy also led to economic growth.
In 1982, Argentina occupied the Falkland Islands, which were reclaimed by the UK.
In 2014, Scotland voted to leave the UK, but more than 55 per cent rejected this.
The referendum on leaving the EU was different, with 52 per cent voting in favour.
The political system in Great Britain
Parliament, from which all state power in the United Kingdom emanates, consists of a House of Lords and a House of Commons. The House of Commons, also known as the House of Commons, consists of 650 MPs, which is exactly the number of constituencies. The number of members of the House of Lords is not limited. Currently there are 794 members. Power is effectively vested in the House of Commons, with the House of Lords having the right to defer legislation for one year.
The UK has a first-past-the-post system, so there are often only two parties in the House of Commons. The Conservative Party and the Labor Party alternate in government.
The head of state is Queen Elizabeth II, who appoints the prime minister but otherwise has no decision-making power. The head of government is the Prime Minister.
Entering the UK with ETIAS
The exit from the EU has also changed things for UK citizens. This also applies to the future entry regulation ETIAS. In future, anyone wishing to enter the USA will have to fill in a form online.
The effort is minimal and the costs are also kept within limits. The only requirement is a passport. According to current knowledge, it is not necessary to send in the passport and/or passport photos. For this reason, special care is necessary, because mistakes will not be recognised. If the name, passport number or date of birth is entered incorrectly, ETIAS is invalid.
The security questions must not be answered with yes. If this is the case, there is at least a delay, often even a refusal of entry.
ETIAS can only be filled out online. Those who do not have an internet connection or a suitable terminal device can also have the form filled out by a friend, acquaintance, agency or travel agent.
The specified country of entry is binding for the first entry. For subsequent entries, the tourist or business traveller can move freely within the Schengen area.
The tourist should always bear one thing in mind: although ETIAS is a necessary prerequisite for entry into the Schengen area, it is not a guarantee. The final decision is always made by the FRONTEX official. Should he or she be of the opinion that the traveller poses a danger, he or she will refuse entry.
