ETIAS to be postponed by six months to November

English

The launch of the European Travel Authorisation System ETIAS will be postponed by six months from May to November 2023, according to the European Commission's website (https://home-affairs.ec.europa.eu/policies/schengen-borders-and-visa/sma...). No reason is given for this.

Only good planning guarantees safe travel with ETIAS

The new postponement (until a few months ago there was still talk of "end of 2022") may be annoying for many travellers, but nevertheless good preparation is better. Mishaps happen quickly in such an extensive project and nothing is more annoying than travellers who cannot enter the country because their ETIAS cannot be verified.

ETIAS works with several databases. Some of these are already in operation, others are still being developed. It is possible that the reason for the postponement of ETIAS lies in the databases that are not yet ready. The databases that are already in place include:

- The Schengen Information System

- The Visa Information System

- The Europol data

- The data from Eurodac

An Entry/Exit system is under development. Unfortunately, no data is available on whether this system is already operational.

In addition, there are the Interpol databases for stolen and lost travel documents.

The effort for ETIAS is low

Some travellers are looking forward to the start of ETIAS with scepticism and may be happy that ETIAS has been postponed. This is short term thinking, as ETIAS does bring some benefits. Perhaps the biggest is the gain in security. This will benefit people living and working in the Schengen area as well as travellers.

Filling out the application is no more and no less than a solidarity contribution that every tourist must make for the safety of all residents in the area.

The application can only be filled out via the internet. Those who do not have an Internet connection and do not want to get one do not have to stay at home. Friends, acquaintances, travel agents and agencies can also fill out this form.

It is important to enter the information correctly. A small mistake in the numbers will invalidate the document and it must be re-applied for. Since the traveller does not have to submit a passport, there is no way to check the accuracy of the information.

Once the application has been sent, it usually takes only a few hours for it to be approved. In some cases it may take longer, so it is advisable to submit the application in good time.

 Conclusion

The European Commission's website states that ETIAS will not be introduced until half a year later, in November 2023. Reasons for this were not given. While this is not particularly good news for safety in Europe, it is better to introduce a well-functioning system than an ETIAS that is not yet fully developed.
