ETIAS increases the importance of FRONTEX

Undefined

FRONTEX is one of those acronyms that is hardly known among the population. FRONTEX means frontières extérieures and is the European Border and Coast Guard Agency. Its task is to monitor the external borders of the Schengen area and prevent unauthorised entry. FRONTEX officers are responsible for border control, among other things. With the introduction of ETIAS at the end of the year, the importance of ETIAS is increasing.

The most important tasks of FRONTEX

As mentioned, FRONTEX is responsible for the surveillance of the external borders of the Schengen area. Each officer has access to an extensive data bang. This is the same data that is used to check travellers' ETIAS applications. This makes it easy to filter out people who may be planning a terrorist attack. Should problems arise at the external borders, FRONTEX intervenes immediately and secures the borders. In recent years, staff shortages have been a major problem. This became visible during the refugee crisis in 2015.

Through ETIAS, the Schengen area does not want to withdraw from the rest of the world, but to continue to maintain good economic contacts. The exchange of goods and innovations should be disrupted as little as possible. Nevertheless, the external borders must of course remain secure. ETIAS makes a valuable contribution to this.

 Increased security through more staff

In order for FRONTEX to be able to cope with a heavy rush at the external borders in the future, the number of staff will be greatly increased in the near future. Currently, the office has about 1200 employees. After the introduction of FRONTEX, this will no longer be sufficient. At present, anyone who wants to enter the Schengen area only needs a passport. This is only checked briefly, if at all. In order to ensure a really effective control of all travellers, FRONTEX should have more than 10,000 employees by the end of the year.

A short effort for more security

Those who have been able to simply cross the borders so far will soon have to change. However, the effort is minimal. The application can be filled out quickly via the internet. In most cases, approval is granted within a short time.

For the individual, it is a small effort from which all travellers benefit through increased security.
