ETIAS changes the possibility to enter the Schengen area

English

Some people are skeptical about innovations. A period of uncertainty follows, which does not please everyone. This will be the case when the new entry system ETIAS is introduced. In the beginning many questions may arise. An advantage is whoever deals with them in advance. Travelers will then be able to avoid the cliffs more easily.

The application is quickly filled out

How the application will look like in detail is of course not yet known. The responsible authorities are working on it. You can get an approximate impression by looking at the US-American ESTA application.

It takes only a few minutes to fill it out. It is possible that the ETIAS application may leave out some questions. In addition, the application is valid for three years, so it is not necessary to fill it out as often.

The application can only be filled in online. For most people this is not a problem. You have an Internet connection, the appropriate terminal (computer, cell phone or tablet) and the necessary technical know-how. If holidaymakers have problems with this, they can also ask a friend, acquaintance, travel agency or agency.

A passport is required to cross the border. The passport number, exact name and date of birth must be entered exactly into the form. If an error occurs, the document is invalid. Unfortunately, this cannot be determined when the application is submitted.

Usually the border official is the first to notice the irregularity and denies entry. Although it is possible to submit a new ETIAS application at the airport at short notice, the aircraft has often already departed.

What changes when crossing the border

In the past, travelers only had to show their passports and could cross the border. This will not be any different in the future. While it is advisable to print the ETIAS document, it is not necessary. The border official checks the passport and checks in the computer to see if an ETIAS has been deposited. If the application is correct, the traveler can cross the border.

The border official can of course refuse to allow the traveller to cross the border if he or she feels that the traveller still poses a threat to the internal security of Europe.

When crossing the border in the future, it is important to ensure that the first country to be entered is the one named in the application. This is no longer necessary for subsequent travellers with the same ETIAS application.
