FRONTEX is a name that many have heard, but few can imagine. FRONTEX is responsible for the surveillance of borders, both land and sea borders. FRONTEX's headquarters are in Warsaw. The agency has been in existence since 2004 and carries out its tasks in close cooperation with the individual member states. With the introduction of ETIAS at the end of 2022, the work of FRONTEX will of course also increase. Currently, FRONTEX employs around 1200 people. This number is expected to increase to 10,000 by 2027.
FRONTEX ensures smooth border crossing
Through ETIAS, the borders in the Schengen area must be better controlled, only then does the system make sense. Nevertheless, long queues should not form at the borders. That is why the number of staff has been increased. However, a large number of staff does not guarantee safe border crossing. It is also important to pass on information. That is why all staff members can access the information systems inside and outside the Schengen area. Among other things, until ETIAS is established, there is a watch list on which all persons who pose a (potential) danger are recorded.
FRONTEX is committed to reacting to problems as quickly as possible. This is only possible because all member states can request personnel within FRONTEX, which is also provided to them immediately. This system has not always been successful in recent years, due to the lack of personnel. In 2015, during the refugee crisis, countless people wanted to cross the borders. Meaningful control was hardly possible due to staffing. This event shows how important it is that FRONTEX staffing be increased.
Security, not isolation, is the goal of ETIAS
The EU does not want to close its borders with ETIAS. As before, anyone who wants to visit the country as a tourist or business traveller is allowed to cross the borders. ETIAS ensures that only people who pose no danger cross the borders. Therefore, the traveller has to submit his or her personal data. Of course, these are deleted again when the ETIAS permit loses its validity.
FRONTEX has controlled the EU's external borders in the past and will continue to do so. ETIAS does not make FRONTEX redundant; on the contrary, it enhances its value.
The effort for travellers is minimal. They only have to fill out an application online. It is important that the information in the passport is taken over exactly. Even a small mistake will invalidate the application. The application will then be processed within a short time and the traveller can leave for the Schengen area. By the way: If you do not have a computer or other digital device, you can also have your friends or an agency fill out the application.
