Europe is a popular destination for tourists from Asia and the USA. Many tourists choose to travel to destinations within the Schengen area. However, the more tourists travel to the Schengen area, the greater the risk of terrorist attacks. The USA reacted to this threat several years ago and established the ESTA system. Anyone who wants to travel to the USA can only do so if they first fill out an ESTA application. From the end of 2022, this will also be the case in Europe. Anyone who wants to enter the Schengen area will then need an ETIAS form.
Travellers come to Europe from many countries
Every year, more than half a billion people travel within Europe's borders. However, more than 80 per cent of them do not need an ETIAS because they come from the Schengen area anyway. Around eight percent of travellers come from North or South America. That is 83 million visitors. Slightly fewer, namely seven per cent, enter the Schengen area from the Pacific region or Asia. One per cent come from the Middle East and Africa.
The number of business travellers and tourists entering the Schengen area increases year after year. The increase in travellers from Africa or the Middle East is remarkable. Many of these countries are experiencing economic growth every year, and with it, increasing prosperity. This enables the inhabitants to take longer trips, also to Europe. Travellers coming from Europe itself are also increasing. In recent years, growth has averaged two per cent.
ETIAS is not a burden for travellers
To complete ETIAS, a working internet connection and a suitable terminal device is necessary. Some people have neither. In this case, they have a relative, friend or agency fill out the form. The passport must be valid. From it, the number and other details must be carefully transferred to the form. The security questions are particularly important. These must all be answered in the negative, otherwise the application may be rejected.
Filling out the form takes a few minutes. After submission, all information is checked and approval is granted. A refusal will only be made after a thorough examination. The traveller can appeal against this.
