Is it possible to enter enclaves within the Schengen area with ETIAS?

English

There are several enclaves in Europe that are surrounded by the Schengen area but are not part of it themselves. These are the small states of Andorra between France and Spain, Monaco, San Marino and Vatican City. The latter two are completely surrounded by Italy. Monaco has only one border with France and also borders on the Mediterranean. Time and again, travellers ask themselves whether they will be able to travel to these states with the ETIAS in the future or whether they will need a visa.

Travelling to the "Schengen enclaves" is not a problem

In fact, this question does not arise for air travellers. The states mentioned do not have an international airport, so the journey begins in France, Spain or Italy. Entering the aforementioned states is not a problem, as there are no border controls. Travellers who want to take a holiday in San Marino enter "Italy" as their first destination. They land at the nearest airport and then continue their entry to San Marino without any problems. By the way, ETIAS is of course also valid for travel in other countries. Only the entry into the first country must be indicated on the application, which is then binding.

What else needs to be considered with ETIAS

It will probably only be possible to fill out the application via the internet. People who have neither a connection nor a suitable terminal can still enter the Schengen area. They simply ask a good friend or relative to fill out the application. Travel agencies and agents are also happy to help. The applicant must transmit the data of the ID card correctly or, better, be present himself or herself. Then she or he can give the right answer immediately if anything is unclear. The passport number and the name must be carefully copied. In case of discrepancies, ETIAS is invalid and the tourist cannot enter the country.

The ETIAS permit is issued within a few hours. However, sometimes it can take several days. Therefore, it is convenient if the traveller fills out the application a few days in advance. ETIAS is valid for three years, so there is no rush to enter the country.

As mentioned, the first country of entry must be indicated, which is then also binding. After that, the tourist can move freely within the Schengen area.

When crossing the border, the FRONTEX official can refuse entry. This will probably only happen rarely and only in cases of justified suspicion.
