ETIAS was rejected - what now?

English

After the tourist has submitted his ETIAS application, it is checked against several databases. Within a few hours, he or she will receive a positive reply if no matches were found. Otherwise, the application will be checked again by hand. This may delay the decision by a few days. If entry with ETIAS is not possible due to security concerns or other reasons, the application is rejected. In practice, this happens very rarely.

An appeal against a refusal can be lodged

A rejection of an EITAS application can, under certain circumstances, affect the next trip. If the European authorities handle this in a similar way to their US counterparts, then once an ETIAS application has been rejected, in certain cases no further travel to the Schengen area is possible. This depends on the reason for the rejection. It is therefore in the interest of the traveller that the application is not rejected if possible. With ESTA, there is no possibility of appeal. The European authorities have announced that the tourist can appeal a rejected ETIAS application.

The deadlines for lodging an appeal are indicated on the rejection notice. It is best to submit the appeal in writing by registered mail, so that you can be sure that the letter will reach the authorities in time.

If you fear problems with entry, it is better to apply for a visa immediately. This takes more time and is more expensive. It is important that the costs for the application cover the administrative costs. They are also incurred if the application is rejected.

How to get a Schengen visa

If ETIAS is rejected, the traveller's only option is to apply for a Schengen visa. Since the application can take several weeks, it is better to take care of it early. ETIAS is only intended for tourists and business travellers. Anyone flying into the Schengen area from another country, e.g. to study or work, needs an appropriate visa. It would go beyond the scope of this article to list all the visas. If you are interested, you can find a list of visas and the necessary requirements on the internet.

To obtain a visa, the applicant must often appear in person at the consulate of the country to which he or she wishes to enter. An application will only be approved if all documents are available.

Here's how travellers can avoid having their ETIAS application rejected

The traveller will probably have to answer "no" to all the security questions. If he or she has recently been in trouble with the police or has even spent some time in prison, it is doubtful whether the application will be approved. In this case, it is better to either apply for a visa or find another destination.

Furthermore, it is important to fill out the application correctly. It is more common for the health questions to be rejected because the traveller claims a harmless cold as an illness. The illnesses really only refer to serious impairments.

Often the application is approved even though it is not filled out correctly. This has nothing to do with a refusal. However, if the data on the passport does not match the data on the application, ETIAS is not valid and the traveller is turned back at the airport.
