ETIAS - what is known so far

English

ETIAS is expected to change travel in the Schengen area by the end of 2022. The small expenditure of time is offset by a high gain in security. To ensure that the transition goes smoothly, it is important to familiarize yourself with it in advance. Many of the key points are already known, but others can be understood by looking at the similar ESTA system in the USA.

About the validity and eligibility of ETIAS

The validity is three years. During this period, an unlimited number of trips to the Schengen area are possible. Of course, this does not mean that the tourist can stay in the country indefinitely. The duration of travel is limited to a maximum of 90 days. This applies to a 180-day period.

The three years are limited by the passport. Assuming the passport expires in one year, ETIAS is also only valid for one year. Of course, if the passport becomes invalid for any other reason, the ETIAS authorization will also lose its validity. In this case, a new application or a Schengen visa is necessary.

An ETIAS application can only be submitted by travelers from certain countries. The list is very long and can be found on the Internet. The reason for travel is also important. Permitted are purely tourist trips, visits to relatives and trips for hospitalization. Another reason is business travel. Here a short explanation is necessary. A business trip is a meeting, congress, exploration of business opportunities, meeting with business partners. Under no circumstances should work be taken up. A work visa is necessary for this purpose.

What to consider when filling in the form

When filling in the form, the country of first entry must be indicated. For the first entry this is obligatory, for later entries this is no longer relevant.

Filling out the application is expected to take only a few minutes. It is important to concentrate well when doing so. A small mistake in the number of the passport will lead to a refusal of entry. This also applies to all other information. Since the passport is not sent in, there is no possibility for the authorities to check the information.

The completion must be done on a computer or cell phone. Those who do not have an appropriate terminal can also have the form filled out by a friend, acquaintance, travel agent or agency.

In most cases, the positive approval is available within a few hours. However, it does not guarantee entry. The border official may refuse entry to individuals if he believes they pose a risk.
