Impact of ETIAS on border traffic between the Schengen area and the UK

English

24 June 2016 was a date with far-reaching consequences for the UK. A narrow majority decided to leave the EU. The consequences are well known and have been sufficiently discussed in the press on both sides of the Channel. Many tourists and business travellers who frequently travel to the Schengen area are asking themselves what will change in the future. For the time being, little will change for travellers from the UK. They can enter the Schengen area with a passport and need not worry much about formalities. Not until ETIAS is introduced at the end of 2022.

What will change with the introduction of ETIAS?

For UK residents, there will be some changes with the introduction of ETIAS, but they are unlikely to make entering the Schengen area more onerous. Some media outlets have been upset about the low ETIAS fee. They wrote that they would now have to pay entry to the Schengen area. Of course, this is not correct, because it is an administrative fee that all states have to pay. In return, tourists get the guarantee that they will enter states where they feel safe. Travellers to the Schengen area are well screened and if a tourist poses a danger, he or she is not allowed to enter the Schengen area. To do this, member countries use several databases, including a list of people who have already committed a crime.

Filling out the application is easy

Many travellers fear that the change in entry regulations will impose new burdens on them. But this is not the case. The ESTA application is valid for up to three years, so several trips are possible with one application, so it is not necessary to fill out an application each time.

When applying, it is important that the tourist enters the data from the passport exactly into the form. A mistake in the numbers will invalidate the application. The other questions must also be answered correctly. Once submitted, the application will be approved within a few hours. If there is a problem, it may take several days, so the application should not be submitted on the last day.
