Data is the currency of the Internet. Accordingly, many users are cautious when disclosing their data. They are afraid that they will be resold and eventually be bombarded with personalized advertising. When filling out an ETIAS application, sensitive data is requested. If you have been to the USA often, you can get information at the ESTA. Probably the questions will be similar.
Only security-relevant questions will be asked
When filling in the ETIAS application form, the traveller must answer questions similar to those asked on other websites. Among other things, he will have to provide his name, address, telephone number and e-mail address. As this is an entry permit, the passport number is of course required. Also important is the first country he enters. This is obligatory at the beginning, but for later entries the country of entry is no longer important. Probably he will also have to give information about existing illnesses. However, only safety-relevant information must be given. If you only suffer from flu, you do not have to declare any illness. In addition, the traveler's disposition is also tested by means of several questions.
The verification of the data is carried out in accordance with the data protection regulations
The collected data is compared with several systems. Some databases already exist, others are planned until the introduction of ETIAS. Databases that already exist are
- The Schengen Information System
- The Visa Information System
- The Eurodoc database
- The Europol data
- The database of lost and stolen travel items from Interpol
In addition there is an ETIAS watch list. On this list there are people who, in the opinion of the authorities, represent a potential risk. Furthermore, there will be an entry/exit system until ETIAS is launched. This will help to check the data and make travel within the Schengen area safer.
It goes without saying that the data will be processed in accordance with the DSGVO guidelines.
Travellers will receive an answer within a short time
In most cases the security check does not yield a hit. The travel authorization is issued immediately and is valid for three years from then on. This is of course not the case if the personal data and/or the circumstances of the traveler change in the meantime. If, for example, he gets a new passport or it becomes invalid.
If, contrary to expectations, a match is found after all, the result will be checked again by the responsible office. This can delay the notification by a few days. Only when there is no doubt that the person entering the country must be refused entry will he or she receive a negative decision. He can lodge an appeal against this decision.
