Travellers who have already visited the USA should find the procedure familiar. After all, filling out an application form is also a prerequisite for entry to the United States. Of course, it is not yet certain which questions exactly appear in the application. Since ETIAS is expected to be introduced at the end of 2022, many things may still change. Here for the time being, what is known so far or can be assumed as likely.
Fill out the application online
The application form can only be filled in online. Of course not everyone has the technical knowledge and/or equipment at home. In order to be able to enter the Schengen area anyway, he simply asks a friend or relative to fill in the application for him. This is not a problem and does not change the chances of a positive decision.
It is not necessary to submit the passport. On the one hand, this makes it easier to fill it out, but on the other hand it sometimes leads to a problem. Those who transfer the data inaccurately will have problems at the border. The border official compares the data on the ETIAS application with the data in the passport. If they do not agree that the traveller does not cross the border into the Schengen area, the border control officer checks the data in the passport. It is therefore important to take all the data carefully and to check it three times rather than making a mistake.
What happens after sending the ETIAS application
A separate application form must be filled in for each traveller. Approval will only be granted once the fee has been paid. Different payment methods are available depending on the country of origin.
Now the participant is checked. The system retrieves information from different databases. In 95 percent of all cases, it is unsuccessful. The applicant receives an ETIAS entry permit within a short time.
If there is a hit, the data set is forwarded to the member countries. The European Border and Coast Guard now checks the application. Now the processing time can be extended by up to 96 hours. Sometimes the authorities require further information from the applicant. In unclear cases, the decision must be made within four weeks. Here too, most applicants receive an entry permit. Once the decision has been made, the applicant receives a positive or negative decision. If entry is not to be granted, the applicant will receive a reason for the refusal.
