What does ETIAS mean for Andorra, Monaco, San Marino and Vatican City

English

ETIAS is the European entry system, which should make travel within the Schengen area easier from the end of 2022. One ETIAS allows entry into 26 Schengen countries. There are four enclaves within the confederation of states that do not actually belong to the Schengen area: Andorra, Monaco, San Marino and Vatican City. Will they have to apply for ETIAS in the future if travellers want to enter the Schengen area?

Residents of Andorra, Monaco, San Marino and Vatican City can enter the Schengen area

Although these countries are not officially part of the Schengen area, they do not carry out border controls. It would also be very impractical for Italians to have to obtain a visa every time they travel to San Marino. The ETIAS countries include all EU countries, except Ireland and Great Britain, which will soon no longer be part of the EU. The Schengen area also includes Switzerland, Norway, Liechtenstein and Iceland. The list of states that also belong to the Schengen area also includes the three small states of Vatican City, Monaco and San Marino. Andorra is missing in this list, but is not really important. Since the state is surrounded by France and Spain, travellers must apply for an ETIAS for Spain or France. Andorra is located in the mountains and has no airport itself. The nearest airport is La Seu d'Urgell and is located in Lleida. Although it is called Andorra-La Seu (LEU), it is located in Catalonia, thus on Spanish territory.

What has to be considered by filling in the ETIAS application form

Travellers who want to visit one of the countries mentioned have little to consider. It is likely that travellers will have to enter the first country of travel.  With Monaco, San Marino and Vatican City this is no problem. They belong to the Schengen area anyway. The situation is a little different with Andorra. As Andorra has no airport on its territory, the traveller indicates either France or Spain.

Of course, even when travelling to Andorra, San Marion, Vatican City or Monaco, the application must be filled in conscientiously. An error in the name or in the passport number will invalidate the ETIAS application.

By the way: An approved application does not guarantee entry. If the border official believes that the traveller could be in any kind of danger, he can refuse entry.
