What is known about the validity of ETIAS

English

ETIAS is very similar to the US ESTA system, but there are some differences. These are not to the disadvantage of the traveller. On the contrary, the tourist can appeal against a negative decision and the validity is longer. The following is about the validity of ETIAS and then about which countries you can enter with it.

The ETIAS permit is valid for three years

While ESTA is only valid for two years, travellers with ETIAS can visit the Schengen area for three years. The three years are not fixed. In individual cases, the validity may be shorter. The classic example is the passport. If it expires after two years, ETIAS automatically becomes invalid. This will probably also be noted on the document.

If the passport becomes invalid or the tourist gets another name, ETIAS also loses its validity.

Irritations always arise about the length of entry. ETIAS is by no means a permanent residence permit for three years. Entry is possible for a maximum of 90 days within a 180-day period. This clearly regulates how long the tourist or business traveller may stay in the Schengen area.

 Which countries may be entered?

In principle, all countries within the Schengen area. The traveller must indicate the first country on the form. This is obligatory. For subsequent journeys, these restrictions no longer apply.

The small states of Andorra, San Marino, Monaco and Vatican City do not belong to the Schengen area. This question about the Schengen visa usually does not arise at all, as these countries cannot be entered first. If you want to go to Andorra, you fly to Spain or France. San Marino can be visited from Italy and Monaco from France. Many tourists visit the Vatican as part of a visit to Rome.

Incorrect information on the application form can invalidate ETIAS

When applying for ETIAS, travellers have to answer questions about themselves. Mistakes can easily be made. An incorrect passport number will invalidate the application. In this case, ETIAS is not rejected because the data is not checked before the journey. Only the border official notices this and rejects the traveller. Now he must quickly make another application and hope that it arrives before boarding.
