ETIAS should become reality for the Schengen area at the end of 2022. More than two years will pass until then. A long period, one might think, but considering the many processes that are supposed to run smoothly, the period is quite short. Now the Corona Pandemic has put the whole schedule on hold. Now many travelers ask themselves whether the planned time frame can still be realized at all.
Home office hardly affects the preparations
Whether the planning is really on schedule, there are currently no precise details about this. Appointments sometimes have the characteristics that they are postponed. Also ETIAS should originally start earlier. So it can easily happen that the introduction is postponed once again. But Corona should have little influence on this.
At the moment, large parts of Europe are again in a lockdown or at least in a partial lockdown. ETIAS is mainly about creating the databases and creating the digital infrastructure. This does not require a presence in an office. Many employees of the institutes work from home. The home office enables many people to do their work effectively without exposing themselves to infection.
There is currently no information about an extension. Since the time is still far in the future, many things can of course still change.
ETIAS partly uses already existing structures
In many cases it is not even necessary to create databases, they already exist. It is only necessary to integrate them into ETIAS. Among others, ETIAS accesses the Schengen Information System and the Visa Information System. Data from Europol will probably also be available to ETIAS.
A database for special risk factors and an ETIAS watch list still need to be created.
These databases are very important for the security of travellers. The states have to be very careful when setting up these databases. There must be no mistakes. The security of Europe and therefore the security of all travelers is at stake. If for any reason the construction of these databases is delayed, ETIAS may be postponed. Whether this is related to Corona is then irrelevant. The security of the travelers comes first.
