What is the connection between FRONTEX and ETIAS?
English

Travellers on holiday or business in the Schengen area occasionally hear the name FRONTEX. Many travellers do not have a clear idea of what FRONTEX means. FRONTEX is an acronym for the French term "frontières extéruers". Founded in 2004, FRONTEX is responsible for securing the external borders in the Schengen area. The number of employees is currently 1,200, although the number is to be increased to 10,000 in the next few years. This is also necessary, because with ETIAS, FRONTEX will have many new tasks.

Do all health questions have to be answered?
English

There are many questions to answer when applying for ETIAS in the future. Most people do not consider questions about their name, gender and passport number to be a particularly big violation of their privacy. The situation is different with health data. As one knows from the ETISAS application, health data is also asked for. Presumably, this will also be the case with ETIAS.

Only security-related health questions have to be answered

How to proceed if ETIAS is rejected
English

If the application is filled in correctly and there is no hit in one of the databases, there is no reason for the application to be rejected. However, it can happen. The authorities are very thorough because, after all, only people with good intentions are supposed to enter the country. Anyone with a thick criminal record or who is even a terrorist should not enter the country.

What happens after the application has been sent?
English

ETIAS approval usually takes place within a few hours. Without the traveller noticing, many processes run in the background. Since these are controlled by electronic systems, the mere query is very quick. Only if there is a hit does it take a little longer. In this case, the applicant is not rejected across the board, but is examined in more detail manually. Of course, this takes a little time. In this case, the approval of the application is delayed by a few days.

ETIAS is an effective weapon in the fight against terrorism
English

At first glance, it does not make sense why ETIAS should be a good weapon in the fight against terrorism. After all, it is only a form that tourists and business people have to fill out before entering the country. However, if you look at the current situation and consider what will change with ETIAS, it quickly becomes clear. Now, travellers from certain countries are allowed to enter the Schengen area without a visa. These are countries from which it is assumed that there is no great danger. Nevertheless, one cannot be sure.

What is possible with ETIAS?
English

If ETIAS is implemented as planned, it will not only make travelling in the Schengen area safer, but it will also be easy to complete and very convenient to use. The following article deals with how long ETIAS is valid and how long you are allowed to stay in the Schengen area with it. Finally, there is the question of which journeys can be undertaken with ETIAS.

ETIAS is valid for three years - normally

The ETIAS application is quickly filled out
English

Many people are unsettled by new developments. Those who have so far only been able to enter the Schengen area with a passport may already have heard that a fundamental change is in the offing here from the end of 2022. Similar to travelling to the USA, from this time on travellers will have to submit an application with their personal data. This will be checked, after which authorisation for travel to the Schengen area will be granted.

ETIAS can only be filled out via the internet

ETIAS does not mean the end of freedom of travel within the Schengen area
English

The greatest achievement of the EU or the Schengen area is the freedom to travel within the area. When the borders had to be temporarily closed during the Corona crisis, this was a difficult decision. The Schengen states are expected to introduce the new entry system ETIAS at the end of 2022. Many travellers are afraid that their freedom to travel will now be curtailed. But that is not the case.

The freedom to travel in the Schengen area also has disadvantages

FRONTEX is very important for ETIAS
English

FRONTEX is a name that many have heard, but few can imagine. FRONTEX is responsible for the surveillance of borders, both land and sea borders. FRONTEX's headquarters are in Warsaw. The agency has been in existence since 2004 and carries out its tasks in close cooperation with the individual member states. With the introduction of ETIAS at the end of 2022, the work of FRONTEX will of course also increase. Currently, FRONTEX employs around 1200 people. This number is expected to increase to 10,000 by 2027.

What is known about ETIAS so far
English

ETIAS is the European Travel Information and Authorisation System, which will make travelling in the Schengen area safer from 2023. Some facts are considered to be very certain, for others travellers can only guess what will be in store for them.
