On 23 June 2016, almost 52 percent of British citizens voted to leave the EU. This means that it is not possible to enter the Schengen area with an identity card or passport only. Since the exit, after tough negotiations, finally on 31 January 2020. With the introduction of ETIAS, UK citizens must also fill out an ETIAS application.

Italy is one of the founding members of the European Economic Community and is also part of the Schengen area.
